How 2 Retired Scientists are Helping to Create a More Sustainable Future by Recycling Scrap Leather

Play episode

This week Frank Fox and Tom Tymon of Sustainable Composites LLC join me on the podcast this week to discuss how they are using their backgrounds in chemistry and textile engineering to do something good for the planet and developed a process to recycle scrap leather.

The global fashion leather goods market is estimated to be a multibillion-dollar industry — but it’s also highly inefficient. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization estimated that some 3.5 billion pounds of leather waste is sent to landfills or incinerators every year, and between 25% and 60% of leather used to make small leather goods is discarded as scrap.

To tackle this problem, their Pennsylvania-based firm developed Enspire Leather, a recycled leather product that replicates the look, feel, smell, and performance of tanned hide at half the cost.

Just recently, they partnered with manufacturers like Timberland and others to improve sustainability and reduce costs along the way. You can learn more about their company by visiting https://www.sustainablecompositesllc.com.
